‘Trading Spaces’ returns to TLC
It’s back. After a 10-year hiatus, the OG of home improvement shows — TLC’s long-running “Trading Spaces” — officially returns to TV with many of the sames faces fans came to know and love, including designers Doug Wilson, Hildi Santo-Tomas and Vern Yip. And yes, Traverse City’s own Carter Oosterhouse also is back as one of the carpenters along with Ty Pennington. The concept is the same: Neighbors will trade houses for two days and work with a designer to transform one room on a limited budget. Host Paige Davis also is back. The show premieres at 8 p.m. April 7 on TLC.
Ten homes on Remodeled Homes Tour
Need some inspiration before you start a big home remodeling job? Check out the 2018 Tour of Remodeled Homes, presented by the National Association of Remodeling Industry of Southeast Michigan. Ten homes in Plymouth and Ann Arbor are on this year’s tour, each of which has undergone some kind of makeover, from a new kitchen to an entire overhaul. Two of the houses on this year’s tour, which runs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. April 21 and 12-6 p.m. April 22, have been completely remodeled. At each project, designers and remodelers who worked on the project will be on site to answer questions. Tickets are $10; kids 5 and under are free. For ticket information, go to www.narisemich.org/.
2018 Garden Guide now available
The Old Farmer’s Almanac was a staple in my husband’s family, a go-to guide for tips on weather, events and other fun miscellaneous information. For gardeners, there’s another guide from the same editors: “The Garden Guide.” This year’s 2018 Garden Guide, which is available now, offers a host of tips on everything from perennial vegetables to creating a garden path. Several articles offer tips on one of the hottest trends in gardening, especially among millennials: vegetable gardening. It’s $4.99 and available at several local retailers, including Books A Million, Ace Hardware and Kroger.
Floyd opens new headquarters, retail space
Floyd is all about versatility. The online furniture company, based in Detroit, makes a table, platform bed and now a side table, all of which can be put together in a matter of minutes, but are built to last a lifetime. Now co-owners Kyle Hoff and Alex O’Dell have opened a brick-and-mortar headquarters and retail space, called The Floyd Shop (pictured), in Eastern Market to give customers a better sense of what they’re all about. Officially open to the public on Saturday, the new space at 1948 Division will feature a table station where customers can try to put together their own Floyd table in record time. Facts about waste in the furniture industry also cover the walls. Hoff and O’Dell also will use their space for events and talks throughout the year. “We started Floyd as a reaction to disposable furniture and poor furniture purchasing experiences,” said the duo on their website. “...We believe furniture should not be difficult to purchase, assemble, or move.
