Good stuff: Snappers, baking mixes, martini
Snappers mix dark chocolate, pretzels, caramel; Among Friends a Martha Stewart finalist; mix a Salted Caramel Popcorn Martini
One good treat
My sweet of choice has always been dark chocolate, and now that Edward Marc Brands has combined the rich, dark treat with crispy pretzels and creamy caramel, I have yet a new favorite, Snappers. The gourmet sweet and salty combo in bite-sized pieces (think chocolate turtles with pretzels instead of pecans) make a great mid-afternoon snack and are perfect for putting out at parties. Look for the 24-ounce bag in Costco stores for $8.99.
One good baking mix
The Ann Arbor company Among Friends, makers of handcrafted baking mixes, has been selected as a finalist in the dry foods category of the 2014 Martha Stewart American Made Awards, which recognizes rising stars who have successful businesses. Among Friends began with two moms, Lizann Anderson and Suzie Miller, on a mission to create baking mixes for tasty, healthy treats full of the good stuff — whole grains, real flavors and premium ingredients. There are five certified gluten-free and whole-grain products in its line of cookies, chocolate cake, brownies and fruit crisp mixes, which are available online and locally at Arbor Farms Market, Busch’s, Country Market, Heller’s, Meijer, Plum Market, Whole Foods and Westborn Markets. Nine winners, with one Audience Choice winner determined by online consumer voting, will be announced Oct. 17 and showcased at an awards event Nov. 7 in New York City. One good cocktail
October is National Popcorn Month. Celebrate with this crazy Salted Caramel Popcorn Martini from drinkinginamerica.com: In a mixing glass, muddle ¼ part simple syrup and 5 caramel popcorn kernels that have been popped. Add 2 parts Effen brand salted caramel vodka and stir with ice. Strain into a chilled rocks glass over ice and garnish with a skewer of 3 popped caramel popcorn kernels. Serves 1.
