Dear Ed: I enjoy reading your column. This week I hope you can help me with my own bathroom remodeling plans. I’m a taller man and would like to have my vanity counter sink top a little higher than normal for extra comfort. Do I have to find someone to custom build my vanity base or build a platform on the floor? Any easier ideas are welcome!

Joe, Georgia

Dear Joe: In most cases, floor-mounted bathroom vanity bases are prebuilt to standard heights. However, if you’re installing a wall-hung bathroom sink without a base cabinet, usually you can make plans to raise the sink up a few inches higher if needed. So, an easier solution for you could be to install a wall-hung designed vanity base cabinet, and you should be able to special order one.

A wall-hung vanity base can offer some extra features over a floor-mounted vanity. For instance, a little extra foot room under the unit, a sleek-looking modern design and most of all, the ability to raise the unit up a little higher. But, you still have the benefits of a standard base unit with plenty of storage, and the ability to choose from a wide range of vanity sink tops.

Bottom line: If you follow your local building codes, a wall-hung vanity can bring your bathroom remodeling plans up to a whole new level.
