The Plumber: Shower base replacement basics
Dear Ed: I read with interest your recent article regarding installing a new premade shower base that can be finished with custom walls.
We just moved into a home with an old shower that needs to be replaced, but we don’t know where to start.
So, I have a few questions. Where can we look at shower bases? Who installs shower bases? What are nice shower base features to look into?
Jane, New England
Dear Jane: As I mentioned, factory-made shower bases are available in different sizes and can be made with different materials. Installing a shower base with custom walls can give your shower a custom look without having to make a shower pan base from scratch.
To address your questions: You can usually find shower bases on display at plumbing supply houses and home centers with well-stocked kitchen and bath showrooms.
Speaking of kitchen and baths, I recommend calling a local licensed and insured kitchen and bath remodeling company, since remodeling a shower stall may include several trade contractors.
Finally, look at units that have concealed drains and built-in seats that can give your new shower base a custom look from the bottom up.
