‘Dr. Drainage’ tells you how to avoid standing water

With the heavy rains that hit our area, mosquitoes are sure to follow. And the first confirmed cases of the Zika virus in the U.S. make people want to keep these pests away even more. “The single most effective thing homeowners can do to minimize the presence of mosquitoes around their properties is to eliminate standing water wherever it occurs,” says Ryan Larsen in a press release. The civil engineer at NDS Inc. has helped hundreds of homeowners with drainage problems. Known as “Dr. Drainage,” he’s the host of the company’s YouTube video series on drainage systems and storm water management. Watch his videos on youtube.com/user/ndstraining or see his tips at ndspro.com/home-drainage.

Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Douglas & Co. opens new store in Detroit

It’s been less than two years since Shane and Melissa Douglas began designing handcrafted bags, totes, clutches and wallets made from fine leather, working out of a loft in Midtown. They just opened their new workshop and store at 609 East Milwaukee Street in Detroit, in the garage of the former Peerless Machine Weighing Co. Their products include bags, cardholders, clutches, keychains and wallets that come with a certificate of authenticity indicating the series number and quantity in that run. Among the modern and sophisticated creations that are handcrafted are the decorative flags designed by Tall Whiskey Ginger and made in collaboration with Wild Standard.
