It’s a summer tradition: Homestyle’s Garden Photo Contest.

And now with the season nearly over – fall officially starts Thursday, no matter what the thermostat says – it’s time to whittle down the list of 13 finalists in our garden photo contest and name our grand prize winner. The winner will receive a $100 gift card and a basket of gardening goodies from English Gardens.

Our talented finalists and their photos, selected from more than 300 entries from all over Metro Detroit, show that every garden has a story.

Johnathan Shearrod of Detroit’s Boston-Edison neighborhood has a face on a tree in his garden that he calls “Mr. Tree.” Sandra Bosca of White Lake created her garden sanctuary after developing severe vertigo.

All of the finalists’ gardens are a varied mix of plants, colors and textures. And most have been decades in the making. Ken and Lisa Fox of West Bloomfield say their yard – pictured in “Nirvana” – has been a work in progress since 1978.

But there can only be one winner. The grand prize winner will be named Friday. Stay tuned!
