Catherine Beattie’s email caught the attention of the Battle of the Bathroom judges immediately: “I am entering on behalf of my mother who is 84 and in desperate need of help remodeling the small bathroom in her home in Livonia,” she wrote.

Dolores Beattie, a widow who has lived in the home since 1964, had started a bathroom remodel with family help, but it was “going nowhere,” Catherine says.

“This has been a project going on three years and every step forward to get it done seems to be another three in the opposite direction,” says Catherine, who describes the bathroom as “crumbling.” She said her family was often inspired by home improvement shows but found “we are not the handiest people.”

Dolores Beattie’s refurbished bathroom will be outfitted with a new toilet, bathroom vanity, sink, and shower and bath faucets from Infusion Kitchen and Bath Showrooms by Etna Supply, valued at more than $9,000. KDI USA will assist with installation. She’ll also receive bathroom design advice from the American Society of Interior Designers’ Michigan chapter and a customized painting treatment from Faux Couture.

“Catherine’s touching story reaffirmed that after nearly 53 years in the same home where she raised three children, her mother was long overdue for our assistance,” says Joe Jenkins of KDI USA.

More than 200 people entered the Battle of the Bathroom contest sponsored by Homestyle and the Novi Home Show.
