Tips to keep your pipes from freezing this winter

Frigid temps can lead to frozen pipes. The Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness estimates that a quarter-million homes are damaged each winter because of frozen water pipes. Even a small crack can release 250 gallons per day, enough to destroy floors, furniture and other household items. Plymouth Department of Municipal Services Director Chris Porman says prevention is key. “Homeowners should check insulation around pipes, especially those on exterior walls, before the weather gets cold,” he said in a press release. “Properly insulated plumbing is much less likely to freeze.” The American Red Cross also provides useful tips like advising homeowners to open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to help circulate warmer air around pipes, and to keep the thermostat set to the same temperature at night as you do during the day. Add greens to your winter white

If you’re looking to add a fresh element to your environment, you may want to consider making green plants part of your healthy lifestyle. According to the experts at Blumz, with locations in Ferndale, Detroit and Holly, they help purify the air, reduce sound pollution in the home and they can help deter illness too. Succulents are another popular option, known for their unique appearance and low maintenance. Originating from dry, desert locations, there are about 60 different plant families containing succulents, which are generally pest resistant. Just add a cute container to the equation and you’re good to go. For information, go to blumz.com.

Garage doors don’t have to be plain Janes

Let your garage door make a statement with one of three new wood grain options from Haas Door that replicate the appearance of wood without the maintenance hassles. The new stucco embossed English Oak, Mahogany and Ash wood grains are available in bi-directional patterns on durable steel garage doors. “These three new bi-directional wood grain color options provide a vertical wood grain pattern on the panel and stile, with a horizontal pattern on the rails,” said Jeffrey Nofziger, president of Haas Door, in a press release. “This offers the genuine look of a real wood door, but with the strength of steel. Plus, we’ve added a strong 10-year warranty to the doors to assure homeowners of their durability.” The new wood grains are built with 26-gauge galvanized steel and the pre-painted wood grain finish is baked on to ensure a strong, long-lasting door.
