Hagopian hosts 29th Student Rug Design Competition

In recognition of aspiring local talent, Hagopian World of Rugs and the College for Creative Studies (CCS) recently held the 29th Student Rug Design Competition at the Hagopian Birmingham showroom. The design criteria, Detroit-50 years later, challenged students to consider the history that helped to shape the city we now know. They were asked to use their youthful perspective to create a rug using color and interpretive design to reflect a vision of the city then, now and in the future. First place went to senior Manal Shovkair for her design inspired by the Heidelberg project (above); second place to senior Nadine Dupont for her design based on communities coming together; third place was awarded to senior Indigo Carr for her design based on the QLine. Two Honorable mentions went to senior Katherine Chmielewski who cited hope and unity as her inspirations. The competition also gives students the chance to compete for scholarships funded by Hagopian ($1,500 first, $1,000 second, $500 third, plus a $1,000 donation to the school annually). In addition, the first-place design is made into a rug and displayed at the annual CCS Student Exhibition that is open to the public in May. For information, go to
