As a personal haven, a home provides comfort in a number of ways, one of which can go so far as to enhance our health. So, I’m working up a wish list of potentially beneficial additions to help improve my favorite refuge.

Replacing our aging mattress has been on my mind for quite some time. Besides the fact that it no longer offers enough support for my back, its low profile has made it harder for me to get up with my arthritis. While I’m not completely sold on some of the newer models like memory foam, I’m sure I’ll find the right fit that combines a sturdy surface with a frame that lets it sit a little higher than our current configuration.

Just trying something new that’s good for you can be inspiring. For instance, after riding a recumbent bike, which also tops my list, I can see how it makes more sense for me at this point that my old treadmill.

Some of my other priorities are smaller and more affordable, like a comfort mat that provides cushy support while standing at the kitchen sink. This simple fix is bound to make dishwashing more tolerable than standing directly on the tile floor.

Cooking healthy meals at home is another goal of mine. Hectic schedules often lead to takeout and prepared foods that become costly and predictable after a while.

I’d also like to replace some of our old trash cans with styles that better fit their allotted spots in the kitchen and master bathroom. I especially like the ones with soft-closing lids and foot pedals that make life a little easier.

After this past winter, we can all use some vitamin D. But, ever since we had our deck redone, I’ve spent very little time outside during the milder seasons. This may be due to the fact that our outdoor furniture has become a bit worn and no longer feels welcoming.

With the more luxurious options that are out there today, I’m ready to look into something new for outdoor lounging. Even though it’s not a large area, I’m sure we can find comfortable pieces on a smaller scale to make this a more desirable destination again.

In the meantime, until the warmer temps settle in, I try to follow the advice my mother-in-law once gave me while staying here. Even during the freezing cold winter, she suggested we open the windows for at least 10 minutes a day to let some fresh air inside.

In the spring and summer months, I like to combine the fresh air with the breeze from a ceiling fan that seems to have a calming effect. When we recently had to replace one of ours, I was impressed by the latest selections. Not only are the newer styles more to my liking, but the LED light that is expected to outlast our fan means no more climbing on a ladder to change a lightbulb.

For now, I’m hoping these simple changes will help point the way to a healthy, happy home.
