Organizing: How to start getting everything in place

Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin started The Home Edit, a home-organization business based in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2015 after a mutual friend introduced them. After a four-hour lunch they left as business partners, Shearer says.

Whatever chemistry the pair has is clearly working. The company, which has five employees in addition to Shearer and Teplin, has completed dozens of projects in at least 13 cities, with plans to eventually have teams in Los Angeles and New York. (They also offer a virtual option, where they help clients organize their space via email and images.) Notably, Julianna Zobrist, Christian singer and wife of Chicago Cubs player Ben Zobrist, took full advantage of The Home Edit’s services.

We had the duo answer a few of our burning organization questions. The following has been edited for space and clarity.

Q: In which area of the home do people tend to need the most help?

The Home Edit: The kitchen/pantry is by far the space we organize most. It’s the Grand Central Station of every home and tends to need the most help and is often in disarray.

Q: For folks who need a complete home organization makeover, where is the very best place to start?

A: If you plan on doing it yourself, always, always, always start with a drawer. It’s like practicing on a bunny slope before heading to the top of the mountain.

Q: The Home Edit’s Instagram is gorgeous. Any photography tips for the amateurs out there?

A: We always try to use available light when possible, but beyond that, we’ll leave the tips to the experts! We are total amateurs and just ended up taking photos that people like. Literally. On Instagram.
