Dear Ed: We’re thinking of installing natural stone sinks in our new bathroom. Before we make our final decision we need more information. What type of stone is normally used to make stone bathroom sinks, and can artistic accents be added? Also, are special faucets needed for these special sinks?

— Carl, Rhode Island

Dear Carl: Natural stone is a beautiful bathroom sink material and usually available in a vessel-type sink. Popular choices are sinks made from marble and limestone.

Stone is a very versatile material and can be handcrafted into different shapes and even etched to create special designs and textures.

If you choose a vessel-type stone sink, like most vessel sinks you’ll need to install either a tall deck (countertop) mounted faucet or a wall-mounted faucet.

Finally, stone sinks are a high-end item, and you should price them up first so your bathroom budget won’t hit rock bottom later!
