When it comes to making sure her beloved plants are tended to while she’s out of town, Cathy Dueweke of Grosse Pointe Farms has it down to a science.

She gathers most of her potted plants on the patio. “I then set up an overhead (oscillating) timed sprinkler system — my first thoughts would have been they will get mildew or spread disease, but I have been doing this for many summers while away and they thrive,” said Dueweke in an email.

Her system works. Dueweke calls her garden “a melting pot” of ceramic containers and garden areas.

“I have about two-thirds shade and the rest sun due to my (huge) maple tree,” she says. “I find my shaded annuals flourish in pots because the tree is not able to absorb the water and nutrients dedicated to them.”

Dueweke’s photo, “Vacationing Plants,” is the final weekly winner of our 2018 Homestyle Garden Photo Contest. She’ll win a free book; she'll also be a finalist for our grand prize, a $200 gift card to English Gardens.

Now it’s your turn to pick the big winner. Voting begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, and runs through 5 p.m. Sept. 12.
