Metro Detroit to ring in dry, cool New Year's weekend
Good news: Umbrellas won't be necessary during this weekend's New Year's celebrations, according to the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.
Better news: No need for heavy jackets early next week.
But first, Metro Detroit must get through Friday, when temperatures are expected to hit 30 degrees with cloudy skies and a chance of snow flurries.
"No accumulation, just some light flurries and maybe a snow shower," meteorologist Mike Richter said.
Then it's New Year's Eve.
"Looks like it's going to be windy and warmer, with highs getting close to 40 degrees," Richter said. "We could see some wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour ... so it'll feel cooler. The wind chill will be around 30 degrees."
Dry conditions Saturday are expected to extended into New Year's Day.
"Sunday, we're looking at highs in the mid 30s," Richter said. "Our normal high for Detroit is 33 degrees, so we'll be a little bit below normal Friday but then Saturday and Sunday we're talking a little bit above normal, so it's not bad at all."
Remember those umbrellas? Keep them handy for Monday.
"Rain is coming in," Richter said. "We have a high of about 45 degrees but we do have an increasing chance of rain, particularly the end of Monday into Monday night."
Most of the rain should clear out by Tuesday, when temperatures could reach 50 degrees.
"We have get up to 50 degrees by (Tuesday) afternoon with rain chances around 20 percent," Richter said.
Enjoy Tuesday, because Wednesday marks winter's return.
"We return to reality by the end of the week, with temperatures in the low 30s by Wednesday and then highs in the 20s for the rest of the week," Richter said. "It's kind of a roller-coaster ride."
