Rain, snow in Metro Detroit forecast this week

Holly Fournier, The Detroit News

The weekend's dense fog has lifted, leaving behind mild, rainy weather through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

"We have some rain moving in right now and this rain will continue on for the late morning hours and into the early afternoon," meteorologist Alex Manion said shortly after 10 a.m. Monday. "There won't be dense fog, but it'll still be misty and damp."

Officials lifted a dense fog advisory around 3 a.m. Monday, he said.

"We'll reach the mid 40s for a daytime high (on Monday), so still mild for this time of year. The normal for this time of year in Detroit is 32 degrees," Manion said. "(On Tuesday), you're looking at a very slight chance for some morning drizzle and the afternoon will be fairly dry. Daytime highs will get into the lower 40s."

Early Wednesday, the morning rush hour will bring a slight chance for a wintry mix before temperatures rebound back into the 40s.

"Our southern counties will most likely see rain, however once you go north of I-96, you'll have a chance of more of a wintry mix," Manion said.

On Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop to match the season.

"We're looking at highs in the upper 30s (on Thursday), and Friday, Saturday and Sunday will take us back to normal," Manion said. "So you'll see temperatures in the low to mid 30s."

All four days carry chances of lake-effect snow, Manion added.

"The major thing with lake-effect snow is the chance for snow squalls, very heavy snow amounts in a very short amount of time," he said.

Meteorologists will develop a more detailed forecast as the weekend approaches, Manion said.
