Animal lovers can add "pets" to their shopping list on July 22 when the Michigan Humane Society holds an animal adoption event at Detroit's Eastern Market.

"Meet Your Best Friend at the Market" will feature about 50 cats, kittens, dogs and puppies that are ready for adoption.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 22, coincides with the Eastern Market Music Festival. The pets will be located in front of Eastern Market's Shed 5 on Russell Street in Detroit.

"The Michigan Humane Society believes pets are family," the Humane Society said in announcing the event. "That is why it hosts adoption events at popular family attractions."

The event is in its fifth year. It is the first time it is branded as "Meet Your Best Friend at the Market," the Humane Society said, with help from Purina and Sellers Subaru.

According to the Humane Society, summer is a good time to adopt an animal because families often have more time to train and socialize new pets. It said it's easier to house train a puppy when it’s warm outside because some dogs don't like to go outside when it's cold.
