Roseville boy, 4, fatally shot by sibling; father arrested

Gary Chang.

Roseville — A 4-year-old boy was fatally shot by a sibling Friday morning and their father has been arrested, police said.

Gary Chang, 27, was arraigned in the 39th District Court on one count of second-degree child abuse, a 10-year felony.

At the time of the shooting, the slain child, who has not identified by police, had been in the basement of the home with his father and his siblings, Roseville Deputy Chief Donald Glandon said in a statement.

The father, who lives in Sheboygan, Wisc., was visiting the children in the Roseville home on the 16000 block of Dort, Glandon said. The gun belonged to Chang's brother and was brought from Wisconsin into the home.

An unidentified man talks to a Roseville police officer as he continues his investigation. Roseville police officers investigate the shooting death of a 4-year-old boy at 16415 Dort, between Chalmers and Hudson, in the city, Friday morning, Dec.14, 2018.

At around 8:40 a.m., Chang left the handgun on a bed and went into the bathroom with the mother, Glandon said. That's when one of the siblings picked up the gun — a small frame .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun — and it discharged, striking the boy.

Chang's bond was set at $150,000 cash/surety, and he was ordered to have no weapons and wear a tether if he posted bond. He will appear in court for a preliminary hearing at 8:15 a.m. on Dec. 26.

Police say the charges may be modified as the investigation continues.

Earlier in the day, family had gathered outside the Dort Street home to find out what had happened.

Martha Kue, who identified herself as the aunt of the boy, said she didn't realize it was her family when she first heard the news.

"It's really scary," Kue said.

She said the boy has a twin brother.

According to Glandon, an 8-year-old sibling was downstairs and found the gun in a pool table pocket before the shooting. He handed the gun to his father, who then tossed it on the bed before leaving the room.

It was unclear whether the 8-year-old pulled the trigger or if another sibling was involved.

The boy was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"It's a tragedy a 4-year-old lost his life, and we're trying to determine what transpired," Glandon said.

The shooting is the second shooting this week in Roseville. On Tuesday, 17-year-old Antonio Christian was fatally shot outside on Pinehurst near 12 Mile.

An unidentified man talks to a Roseville police officer as he continues his investigation Friday.

The shooting of Christian occurred around 10:40 p.m. Officers were called to the area after getting a report of shots fire in the neighborhood. Christian was found on a sidewalk. He died later at a local hospital, police said.

A suspect who fled the scene on foot was arrested at about 7 p.m. Wednesday after police obtained a search warrant, police said. Detectives arrested the suspect without incident.

A 21-year-old Utica man had been arrested following the teen's death Tuesday. The search was conducted at a Utica apartment less than 24 hours after the shooting.

The suspect was released Friday.

Anyone with information on Christian's shooting is asked to call the department at (586) 447-4493 or (586) 447-4484.
