Detroit – — Students got help preparing for the start of classes during Tuesday’s Back to School Festival at Greater Grace Temple.

Students ages 5-12 were given free school supplies, haircuts, immunizations, eye exams, dental care and refreshments during the 16th annual event at the church in northwest Detroit.

The festival started when Bishop Charles Ellis III, the church’s senior pastor, learned some public school teachers were buying school supplies with their own money. Since then, the church and donating businesses have given free school supplies to nearly 15,000 children, according to the church.
