East Lansing — Michigan State University plans to kick off the public phase of its largest fundraising effort with news of a major financial gift, a piece of music composed for the occasion and an appearance by basketball coach Tom Izzo.

The official launch of the capital campaign comes Friday at the East Lansing school’s Wharton Center for the Performing Arts. The goal of the drive is expected to be set and approved by the university’s Board of Trustees earlier in the day.

University officials say the campaign launch event includes the announcement of an “8-figure” financial gift and the performance of a musical piece composed by Tony Award-winning alumnus William David Brohn. Izzo is among the dignitaries expected to attend.
