Ticks and Lyme disease are spreading across Michigan. Here's why

The first deer tick to creep across Rick Simek's skin was not exactly a welcome visitor to its host, a naturalist who has stewarded the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Environmental Study Area for decades. But it also wasn't unexpected. 

Simek had been waiting for one of the stealthy eight-legged critters to appear on campus for years. One appeared in 2005, making itself comfortable on his own skin.
