Hamtramck — A Michigan state trooper and a dispatcher trainee were seriously injured Thursday afternoon when a pickup truck hit their patrol car on southbound Interstate 75.

The incident happened around 12:20 p.m. Thursday at Caniff after the trooper stopped to police a minor accident, said 1st Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police.

“The trooper was policing a traffic crash when a late-model Cadillac pickup truck — the driver had dropped some files, or for some other reason, he wasn’t paying attention,” Shaw said. “He drove up on the shoulder and struck the back of the patrol car.”

The trooper and a female dispatcher trainee who was doing a ride-along were taken to a local hospital, where they are in serious condition, Shaw said. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

Police continue to investigate.

Southbound I-75 is down to one lane Thursday afternoon at Caniff.

A check of the MDOT freeway camera system shows traffic backed up to McNichols Road.

Suggested alternate north/south routes include Woodward and Joseph Campau.
