Detroit group seeks Easter Meals on Wheels volunteers
Seeking a volunteer opportunity on Easter?
The Detroit Area Agency on Aging wants help from the community to help package and deliver some 3,500 Meals on Wheels in time for the holiday.
The group provides the food to home-bound seniors in Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, Harper Woods, Hamtramck and Highland Park as part of the program, which also runs on Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The holiday meals are prepared by Valley Services, a national food services company, 1980 Bagley Street, Detroit. The meals, which can include turkey, ham, vegetables, scalloped potatoes, juice, milk, lemon pie and a wheat roll, are packed there from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Good Friday, April 3, and from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Easter Sunday, April 5.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the Detroit Fire Department as well as other groups, churches and businesses have pledged resources, service, and time to help deliver the meals, the DAAA said.
“It speaks to the heart Detroiters have for seniors,” said Paul Bridgewater, DAAA President and CEO. “It really does take a village to help keep our seniors safe and healthy.”
