Detroit — A man was hospitalized early Monday after a shooting took place between a woman and suspected robbers on the city’s east side.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at a home on the 5500 block of University Place, near Chandler and Cadieux, Officer Nicole Kirkwood said.

A 29-year-old woman was in an upstairs bedroom at the home while her brother was downstairs when two suspects broke into the residence, Kirkwood said. It is unclear who owns the home.

“The woman heard shots being fired inside of the home,” Kirkwood said. “She heard someone in the home ask if anyone else was in the house so she armed herself.”

The woman then saw two males inside the home, Kirkwood said.

“One of them had a weapon, and they exchanged gunshots at each other,” Kirkwood said. “Then the suspects fled the location on foot.”

A man was hospitalized following the shooting, but it is unclear whether he was one of the suspects in the attempted burglary or a victim.

“There is a shooting victim at the hospital, but I’m not sure if he’s the suspect or not,” Kirkwood said. “This is preliminary information so it still has to be investigated.”

A man and woman left the house around 8:30 a.m. Monday and declined to comment.
