A stretch of Woodward downtown will close Thursday night as menswear designer John Varvatos rolls out the "black carpet" for his store opening celebration.

The high-traffic corridor in front of the John Varvatos store at 1500 Woodward will be the site of an invitation-only party celebrating the arrival of the boutique store in Detroit. Varvatos opened the store to the public March 13.

Rock musician Alice Cooper will perform for the event, which begins at 9 p.m. Thursday, organizers said.

Singer Michael Bolton, Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert and members of the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Pistons are also expected to attend.

Woodward will be closed between Grand River and Witherell until 5 a.m. Friday, the city said Thursday.

Other closures are as follows:

John R/Clifford between Farmer and Griswold.

Farmer, one lane, between Grand River and John R.

Griswold, one lane, between Grand River and Clifford
