Students in Detroit Public Schools can nominate their teacher in the Goodfellows Teacher of the Year Contest.

Students in grades three through eight have until May 29 to address the question: “Why is your teacher so special?” Answers must be no more than 50 words.

It’s the sixth year of the contest sponsored by the Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit.

The winner will get a $200 gift card for classroom supplies, plaque and be acknowledged at the Detroit Goodfellows Annual Tribute Breakfast in the fall. The student whose essay was chosen will get a Barnes and Noble gift card, plaque and classroom treat.

Nominations forms can be found at Entries may be returned through the website or by mail to Detroit Goodfellows PO Box 44444, Detroit, MI 48244.

The winner will be chosen by June 1 and announced at a school assembly in early June.

Last year’s winner was Elizabeth Kolesar, a fifth grade math teacher at Bennett Elementary School.
