Detroit — A man was fatally shot early Tuesday morning outside a gas station on the city’s west side.

The body was found after gunshots rang out around 2 a.m. near a Valero gas station at the corner of Schaefer and Plymouth.

Esmaal Almahmod, a clerk working at the counter, heard the gunshots and looked out the window but didn't see anyone besides the victim on the ground on Schaefer.

Almahmod said police arrived a minute or two later.

One customer was in the store when it happened, but Almahmod didn't think there was anyone else at the station.

Almahmod said this was the first shooting here but added he was "used to hearing gunshots" in the middle of the night. He also said police have security footage from the gas station.
