Detroit — A woman is dead and a 3-year-old girl is in critical condition after their car crashed into a tree on the city’s east side Monday morning.

According to the Detroit Police Department, the crash occurred at about 7:25 a.m. at the intersection of Canyon and Mack near the Detroit/Grosse Pointe Farms city limits.

Police said the woman died at the scene after her black 1996 Honda Accord smashed into a massive tree. Police said they didn’t know if the woman was wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Officers Monday viewed surveillance footage from Bike Tech Detroit, a bicycle shop on the corner of Canyon and East Warren, north of the crash scene.

The woman’s vehicle can be seen in the footage traveling south through the intersection seconds before impact.

No further details were provided.

At least one of the vehicle’s doors became detached during the crash.
