Mom: Slain daughter was ‘good girl’ who got ‘caught up’

The Detroit News

Detroit — Priscilla Harrison is filled with grief realizing her daughter won’t visit again.

Cynthia Worthy was last seen at her home on Cortland around 3 p.m. Friday — headed, relatives said, for a date with a man the 24-year-old met on a social media escorting website.

She never returned. Police found her body Monday evening in the 4000 block of West Davison, on the city’s west side, with fatal stab wounds.

“She was a super-sweet girl who just got caught up doing something just to make some quick money,” Harrison said Tuesday. “She was a good girl. She didn’t deserve this. … She’s got a lot of family and friends who are loving her and missing her right now.

“We’re just praying they catch whoever did this to her.”

The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office announced Tuesday that Worthy had been identified as the body officers found the night before.

An autopsy determined she died from multiple stab wounds to the chest, spokesman Ryan Bridges said.

Detroit police are investigating the death, spokeswoman Sgt. Cassandra Lewis said. No suspects were in custody as of Tuesday night.

Anyone with tips or information is asked to call the Detroit Police Department at (313) 596-1616 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

Through tears Tuesday, Harrison said if her daughter’s death was connected to the escorting website, she hoped “other young girls can learn from this.”

Still, Harrison said, she wanted “people to be respectful of her daughter’s decision and not judge her based on that.”

Worthy — called Cyndee — grew up in Flint, where she worked and attended college, before relocating to Detroit, her mother said.

“She’s been there on her own just for a few years. She was supposed to come visit us this weekend.”

Since Worthy didn’t have insurance, her family has created a GoFundMe account to help pay for funeral and burial costs. The goal is $3,000; about $500 had been raised through Tuesday night.

“I pray you have enough to give Cynthia a wonderful funeral,” one donor wrote on the site. “And I also pray for peace for her family.”
