Detroit — Two major concerts and a Tigers home game, combined with freeway closures, will make for tough downtown driving and parking Saturday.

More than 85,000 fans are expected to pour into downtown in the late afternoon and evening for the Tigers game against the Texas Rangers at Comerica Park, the Kenny Chesney concert at Ford Field and Idina Menzel’s performance at the Fox Theatre.

Olympia Development Parking Services has reserved all the lots it controls east of Woodward for fans attending the Tigers game. Motorists must show a game ticket or parking pass, or have tickets waiting at will call to park in these lots. Tailgating will be suspended to maximize parking space.

All parking lots west of Woodward operated by Olympia Development will be available first-come, first-served.

Motorists are urged to utilize the shuttle service many local bars, restaurants and casinos offer patrons. The People Mover is an option for music and baseball fans who choose to park farther from the sports arena and the Fox.

In addition to the expected parking crunch, Metro area drivers will have to find their way around two weekend freeway closures: one, on I-94, due to construction and the other, on I-75, to make emergency repairs to pavement damaged in a fatal fiery tanker accident Thursday.

Northbound lanes of I-75 between Southfield Road and Outer Drive will be closed until Monday morning, according to state highway officials.

All lanes of I-94 — eastbound and westbound — will be closed from I-75 to the Lodge Freeway until 5 a.m. Monday for bridge work at M-1 (Woodward Avenue). Alternate routes are Warren and West Grand Boulevard.
