Detroit – Sunny skies, blue water, upbeat music — and City Council President Pro Tem George Cushingberry in a swimsuit.

The 62-year-old Cushingberry leaves his business attire behind to take a dip in the Detroit River in a new promotional video touting the beauty of Belle Isle.

It’s the latest segment of “Council Corner,” a Channel 10 public-access series produced by Detroit’s Media Services Department that launched last year to showcase amenities and positive happenings in City Council districts.

The five-minute segment posted today on YouTube opens with the councilman wandering past patrons inside the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and pointing out a mix of the trees and plants on display.

After a quick wardrobe change into flowered swim trunks, the councilman reappears near the shore of the Belle Isle beach and explains how it’s the safest place for swimmers.

“This is one of the cleanest spots in the world,” says Cushingberry, as screaming seagulls circle nearby. “I’m going to go in, to prove to people it’s not unsafe. The sand is nice, it’s native.”

Cushingberry told The News on Monday he plans to film more videos to promote the beauty of the city.

“I decided to try and educate my constituents about what is truly happening in the city, especially for the kids,” he said.
