Detroit — Two elderly women were robbed, kidnapped and carjacked early Thursday morning from the MotorCity Casino parking garage, police said.

The women, ages 72 and 68, were approached around 5:30 a.m. by a man armed with a weapon, Officer Dan Donakowski said.

“He forced them into their vehicle, they drove from the MotorCity Casino for a short distance,” Donakowski said. “Then they were told to get out of the vehicle. They were not injured.”

The women were abandoned on the city’s west side after the suspect escaped in their red PT Cruiser, with the license plate AEW 319, Donakowski said. The suspect also took an undisclosed amount of money and personal property.

A good Samaritan spotted the women and helped them to safety, Donakowski said.

“It looks like an individual assisted them to go into the (Detroit Police Department’s) Second Precinct” on Lesure Street near Schoolcraft and Grand River avenues, he said.

The male suspect is described by police as 6-foot, with a medium complexion, large build and short hair. He was wearing a royal blue shirt and black shorts.

Police are checking if the incident was caught on surveillance footage, Donakowski said.

A representative with the casino declined to comment on the presence of security cameras in the area of the kidnapping, citing the ongoing investigation.

“We take this isolated incident very seriously,” MotorCity casino officials said in a prepared statement. “Our organization is working closely with local law enforcement as they continue their investigation. The safety and security of our guests remain of the utmost importance to us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police department’s commercial auto theft unit at (313) 596-2555.
