Detroit — A man who apparently had been squatting in an abandoned home on the city’s near east side died in a house fire early Wednesday morning.

According to authorities, at about 12:52 a.m., the Detroit Fire Department responded to call about a house fire at 2068 Lawley, in an area near Interstate 75 and the Davison Freeway.

Once firefighters were able to enter the dwelling, they found the body of a 41-year-old man who apparently had been illegally living in the house, according to authorities.

There were no other injuries.

Although the fire is still under investigation, there are a number of illegal electrical hook-ups in the home that may have contributed to the start of the fire.

Firefighters from the Hamtramck Fire Department also responded to the incident.
