A 58-year-old man died Tuesday night after he was knocked unconscious during a fight then accidentally struck by a motorist on Detroit’s north side, police said.

The victim and another man had been fighting near Winchester and John R around 6:45 p.m., said Sgt. Cassandra Lewis, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department.

“The suspect hit the victim so hard he was unconscious,” she said. “He fell back in the street and was hit by a vehicle.”

The driver stopped and helped detain the 44-year-old suspect until police arrived to arrest him, Lewis said.

The older man struck was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his name.

The suspect remained in custody Tuesday night. An arraignment was pending.
