Group protests event honoring city bankruptcy plan architects
Detroit — A retiree group challenging the city’s historic bankruptcy plan protested outside the Detroit Institute of Arts on Thursday as the lead mediator and judge who oversaw the case were to be honored at an awards banquet.
The Detroit Active and Retired Employees Association last month lost an appeal that challenged cuts made under the city’s court-approved bankruptcy plan. The group has vowed to appeal the decision.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge Gerald Rosen and retired U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes were to be honored with the 11th annual Dennis W. Archer Award for public service. The judges are regarded as the key architects of the city’s recovery plan from bankruptcy.
