Livonia man identified in fatal Detroit crash
Detroit — Police have released the name of a Livonia man who was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 in Detroit early Saturday morning.
According to police, Andre Thurmond, 22, died in the incident that occurred at about 4 a.m. on eastbound I-94 near Van Dyke.
A preliminary investigation by police shows that Thurmond’s disabled Chevrolet Impala was stopped on the right shoulder of the freeway.
A Mercedes-Benz traveling eastbound in the right lane was rear-ended by a GMC pickup, which sent the Mercedes careening into the Chevrolet, killing Thurmond.
A passenger in the Chevrolet received minor injuries.
The driver of the Mercedes fled the scene on foot. A search of the car turned up open containers of alcohol.
The driver of the pickup was arrested for operating under the influence and was lodged at the Wayne County Jail. Police are continuing their investigation of the crash.
