Detroit — A body was discovered early Friday morning in a burned-out van on the city’s east side.

Authorities on scene confirmed the van was dumped and on fire when officials arrived to find a body inside.

The van was located around 5:15 a.m. on the 3600 block of Medbury Street behind a tangle of trees and brush in an empty lot at the end of a short alley near Ellery Street.

The body inside was “burned beyond recognition,” Sgt. Cassandra Lewis said. Officials aren’t yet sure if it belonged to a male or female.

Several unmarked vehicles lined the alley early Friday as spotlights illuminated the burned-out van, which appeared to be white in color.

Arson and homicide investigators combed the scene with flashlights as at least one arson dog canvassed the area with a handler.
