Detroit — A trail of footprints in icy, snow-covered Detroit streets Monday evening led state police to an alleged car thief on the run, officials said.

Michigan State Police troopers observed a 1996 Chevrolet pickup with an improper state registration plate around 6:40 p.m. Monday on Rochelle Street near Hayes Street, officials said in a release. The truck was towing a Chevrolet Suburban with no visible plate.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the motorist continued to drive, officials said. The 39-year-old male driver eventually jumped from the moving truck, which then struck another vehicle.

The man fled on foot through the snow, leaving telltale tracks in his wake. Troopers followed the footprints to the 15000 block of Seymour Street in Detroit, where they took the suspect into custody inside a home during a consent search.

It later was determined the towed, 2003 Chevrolet Suburban was reported stolen from Troy, officials said. The suspect had 12 outstanding warrants from the 36th District Court. He was fingerprinted, photographed and lodged at the Detroit Detention Center pending prosecutor review.
