Victim police link to serial rapist dies of injuries
A 17-year-old girl who was beaten during an assault authorities believe is connected to a series of rapes on Detroit’s east side died Tuesday.
The teen was beaten on the head during the attack Thursday at her home in the 5300 block of Radnor. She had been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries since the assault.
Authorities say Darian Winfield, a 19-year-old Detroit man, is a person of interest in the attack on the girl.
Winfield was charged Sunday in connection with the sexual assault of a Detroit woman. Police say he broke into the woman’s house Dec. 30 in the 5800 block of Radnor and stabbed the 39-year-old woman in the chest with a knife with the intent to sexually assault her.
Police say Winfield ran from the woman’s house. She screamed for help and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Winfield was charged with home invasion first degree, assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct. He was arraigned Sunday.
Winfield remains locked up on a $1 million cash bond.
A warrant request had not been presented Tuesday in the case of the teen’s death, said Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
A warrant request was presented for Winfield in connection with a Dec. 15 non-fatal knife attack on a woman in Grosse Pointe Park. Charges are not expected this week for the case.
