Detroit — Police have released a surveillance image of a man accused of snatching a cellphone from a victim earlier this month near a Meijer store on the city’s west side.

Officials are asking the public’s help identifying the unknown suspect, who approached an 18-year-old man around 12:35 p.m. Jan. 11 on the 1300 block of W. Eight Mile. He “acted as if he was armed” and snatched a phone from the victim’s hands.

The victim and a witness struggled with the suspect, before the suspect escaped in a red Jeep.

The suspect is described by police as an 18- to 20-year-old male with medium-length dreadlocks and medium complexion. He is around 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a black vest, camouflage pants and gold Timberland boots.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detroit police at (313) 596-1340. Anonymous tipsters may use the department’s app, “DPD Connect” or call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) SPEAK-UP.
