State police shut down a section of westbound Interstate 96 on Thursday morning while investigating the beating of a teen who was found unconscious inside his car.

A tipster dialed 911 about 2:30 a.m. to report that someone had been assaulted on the freeway near the Schaefer exit on Detroit’s northwest side, said Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw.

“Troopers responded and found the victim unconscious inside the car and bleeding,” Shaw said.

The 17-year-old was hospitalized in stable condition.

Police spoke with the person who placed the 911 call, who saw the assault while driving. “The witness saw two black males enter a gray vehicle and leave the scene,” Shaw said.

Police expect to talk with the victim Friday, Shaw said.

During the crime scene investigation, the freeway was shut down for several hours before reopening.

Anyone with information is asked to call Michigan State Police at (248) 584-5740; or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
