DIA creates private lounge for nursing mothers
Detroit — The Detroit Institute of Arts has created a private lounge as an option for nursing mothers to use while visiting the museum.
The lockable lounge, which is located just off of the Farnsworth Street entrance to the museum, includes an armchair and ottoman alongside a changing table. The entrance to the lounge is adorned with Italian artist Alceo Dossena’s marble sculpture “Madonna and Child.”
Museum Director Salvador Salort-Pons says in a statement that the DIA wants to be “accessible for all visitors” and opening the lounge means that mothers who breastfeed “will now have the option to feed their children in a comfortable, private setting.”
