More than 2,800 middle school and high school students are showcasing their science and math skills in a five-day fair at Cobo Center.

The Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit features more than 2,300 projects in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math disciplines. Students are competing in two divisions — 6th through 8th grades and 9th through 12 grades — for the chance to advance to the 2016 International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix.

In addition, scholarships totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars are awarded to the winners of the Metro Detroit competition, the Michigan Science Fair and the international fair.

Students’ individual and team projects were judged Wednesday, and their exhibits can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

This year’s Metro Detroit fair, the 59th annual event, runs through Saturday.
