Authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Wednesday evening in the Detroit River.

A Michigan State Police helicopter unit spotted the body floating westbound behind the Chene Park amphitheater at about 7:15 p.m., said Officer Nicole Kirkwood, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department. A boater also notified the Coast Guard.

The city police harbor master recovered the body near the Renaissance Center, Kirkwood said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how long the remains, which appeared to have been decomposing, were in the water, Coast Guard officials said.

The body is believed to be that of a 37-year-old African-American, Kirkwood said.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to determine a cause of death. “We’re still conducting an investigation to find out exactly what happened,” Kirkwood said.
