Detroit — A brother and sister found dead Sunday committed double suicide, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The pair died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, officials said Monday afternoon. They have not yet been formally identified by next of kin.

Police earlier reported the deaths as a suspected murder-suicide, but officials with the medical examiner’s office on Monday said the cause of death has been listed as a double suicide.

The 40-year-old man and his sister, 41, were discovered around 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the rear of a home on Lodewyck near Warren on Detroit’s east side, Officer Nicole Kirkwood said on Sunday.

“We don’t know (what led to the shootings),” she said. Police “have to investigate what happened.”

Kirkwood said a witness heard gunshots and discovered the brother and sister dead from their wounds.
