Detroit police are investigating how two devices believed to be hand grenades wound up in a back yard on the city’s north side Thursday.

The devices were found behind a home in the 20200 block of Binder about 7:45 p.m., said Officer Nicole Kirkwood, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Police Department.

The department’s bomb squad responded, blocked off the area, then placed the devices into a containment vehicle for transport to a location where each could be examined more thoroughly, Kirkwood said.

Authorities had not yet determined if the suspected grenades were live, she said.
