A 30-year-old man died after running into traffic on the Southfield Freeway in Detroit early Sunday morning.

About 3:20 a.m., state police responded to a reported assault in progress on the left shoulder of the southbound Southfield Freeway near Schoolcraft Road. Michigan State Police Lt. Calvin Hart could not immediately say how many participants were involved in the assault.

As a trooper pulled up to the scene, a man from the group on the left shoulder ran westbound across the freeway, into traffic. He was fatally struck in the middle lane and declared dead on the scene, forcing a four-hour closure of that area of the freeway as state police investigated.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man has been cooperative, Hart said. Police are also investigating the initial assault.

The man's identity is being withheld by police pending notification of family.
