People Mover downtown reopens ahead of schedule
The Detroit People Mover reopened Friday, three days ahead of schedule after crews completed work on the track and switch replacement.
Construction and testing were initially expected to be complete for a Sunday reopening.
“We’re happy to reopen early for our patrons, thanks to the efforts of the employees and contractors on our project team,” General Manager Barbara Hansen, Detroit Transportation Corp. said in a statement Friday. “Mobility, accessibility and convenience are always benefits of public transportation, and the People Mover will continue to make system improvements in order to be that resource for residents, workers and visitors.”
Officials said the People Mover’s reopening will meet ridership demand this weekend with the Tigers baseball series against the Cleveland Indians and GM River Days on the riverfront through Sunday.
About 180 feet of steel rail were replaced, officials said. Crews installed a new switch and switch machine rods.
