A young man’s body was pulled from the Detroit River early Wednesday, hours after his boat struck a barge and he went overboard, according to police.

The crash happened around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday involving an 18- or 19-year-old man and two other passengers, said Officer Dan Donakowski of the Detroit Police Department. Police are not identifying the victim and it was unknown early Wednesday who was driving the boat.

“They tried to avoid the barge that was in the river, but ended up hitting it,” Donakowski said. “The male went overboard and was discovered later, deceased.”

The man’s body was recovered around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday near the Ambassador Bridge, Donakowski said. No one else was injured.

It remained unclear early Wednesday what caused the crash, which is under investigation.
