Detroit police are investigating after a 2-week-old girl was dead on arrival after being rushed to St. John Hospital on the east side Tuesday morning, Sgt. Michael Woody of the Detroit Police Department said.

Police believe the baby and her mother fell asleep in the same bed and that the baby wound up smothered accidentally. The age of the mother was not immediately available. The incident took place on the 12000 block of Barlow, on the east side, off Gratiot, said Officer Dan Donakowski.

EMS conveyed the baby to the hospital, but it was too late. The baby was declared dead upon arrival to the hospital at about 5:50 a.m., Woody said.
