Detroit police are seeking a person they allege shot a 68-year-old woman in an attempted carjacking Wednesday morning on the city’s west side.

The suspect approached the victim on foot in the 16000 block of Stout at about 11 a.m. and “demanded her keys,” said Officer Dan Donakowski, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department. “When she refused, the suspect snatched the keys. He produced a handgun and fired shots.”

The woman was wounded on the right side of her stomach, Donakowski said. She was listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

The would-be thief fled the scene in a white vehicle, Donakowski said.

Investigators describe him as an African-American male, age 18, 5-foot-6, 130 pounds, with a dark complexion.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detroit police at (313) 596-5840 or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
